Subject intent

The English department aims to create the very best communicators, readers and writers.

Through English Language, we seek to provide our students with the range and quality of language to allow them to access any future possibilities, also developing on their oracy through mature debate and discussion. We strive to provide opportunities that mirror real-life scenarios to allow students to think beyond the content of the classroom. Our aim is to expose our students to powerful knowledge that will result in limitless choices in life. John Ferneley College aims to address the reading vocabulary gap via 'Reciprocal Reading' to explicitly support students with comprehension through prediction, clarification, questioning and summarising.

Through English Literature, our intent is to enrich cultural understanding, consider humanity and to discover the riches of our Literary Heritage. We want all students to broaden their knowledge and to show an appreciation of the world in which they live. These important topics are therefore reflected in the diverse range of texts that we study. Students will also be encouraged to deepen their critical responses and to have the resources to apply thoughtful evaluation. Using a wide range of high-quality texts, our goal is to promote a love and appreciation of literature and develop a love of reading for enjoyment.

Whilst we still consider the content of examinations to be important, our ultimate objective is to provide a curriculum with the skills, concepts and experiences that students will be able to draw from once they embark on their individual journeys after leaving John Ferneley College.
